Save the Date - June 18, 2008 for the 4th Annual Florida Artist & Presenters Network (FAPN) Workshop! The topic this year will be What is Technology Doing for you? The workshop will be a discussion of current trends in email marketing, websites, social networking and other tech tools that can enhance your presenting organization or artist's bookings. This is an opportunity to share what's working for you and ask questions. Workshop participation will be by teleconference. More details will be provided soon.

Literary Artists, Mark Your Calendars!

Fourth Annual, Other Words: A Conference of Literary Magazines and Independent Publishers.
Sponsored by the Florida Literary Arts Coalition and Flagler College. This year’s conference will be held at Flagler College in Saint Augustine, Florida, and will begin with a Thursday night reading on November 6, 2008. Panels, readings, andworkshops will be held all day Friday and Saturday, November 7 and 8.
Conference registration:
$40 for members of FLAC institutions.
$70 for nonmembers.
FLAC member schools/institutions can bring five students for free.
Bookfair table registration:
$50 for FLAC members.
$75 for nonmembers. All Bookfair registrants can register additional staff for $25 each.
The Confererence registration fee includes a Saturday award luncheon.
Additional options:
Friday lunch and workshop with editors. $30.00 (includes a box lunch)
One-on-one sessions with editors. A 30-minute conference to discuss a writer’s work: $30 fee.

Opportunities for Individual Artists

Public Art – The University of Washington Station will be a Sound Transit underground light rail stop connecting the NE Seattle campus with the downtown core and SeaTac International Airport. Transit riders reach the train platform 110 feet below the surface using a series of criss-crossing escalators and staircases as well as fast elevators. A prime art zone is an architectural feature wall reaching from ground level to the train boarding area, which will be designed as a porous, unifying experience for the passengers using the station. The budget of $550,000 is for design, fabrication, installation, taxes and all associated costs. Design: April 2008 - March 2009, Station Opening: 2016 (due to tunneling through Capitol Hill and under Portage Bay). Call to Artists - Brevard Art Museum 2008 Juried Exhibition
July 18 - September 14, 2008 All artists 18 years and older residing in Florida are invited to submit entries to the Brevard Art Museum 2008 Juried Exhibition via www.callforentry.org. All original artworks including paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints, photography, video, computer generated images, and site-specific installations will be considered. Cash awards up to $10,000 include: Excellence Awards of $1,500 each. Purchase Awards: Donald F. Wright Memorial Fund; Merit awards of $500. A Virtual Gallery. Participants in the 2008 Juried Exhibition will be featured on BAM's website: www.brevardartmuseum.org.

Progress Energy Florida is seeking original artwork that depicts the natural beauty of the state as part of its premier “Drawn to Nature” art contest. The winning artwork will be featured on eco-friendly bags offered to Progress Energy Florida customers to promote the benefits of energy efficiency.
The contest is divided into two categories: one for elementary students in grades 3 – 5 and one for adults ages 18 and older. Entrants must reside in one of Progress Energy Florida’s 35 service-territory counties.
The adult winner will receive a purchase award of $2,000, with the runner-up receiving $800. Three student winners will earn U.S. Savings Bonds of up to $500. Their teachers will get equivalent cash prizes to use for classroom art materials. The top adult and student winners will also also have their artwork featured on the bags.

Call to Artists: North Miami - The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is seeking film and video submissions for the tenth rendition of Optic Nerve, the museum's popular film and video showcase featuring work by emerging South Florida artists and filmmakers. The films will be reviewed by a jury of film and art professionals. Optic Nerve X finalists will be screened at MOCA (770 NE 125th Street, North Miami) on Saturday, August 7, 2008. One of the films will be purchased for the museum’s permanent collection with funds provided by Starbucks Coffee Company.

Photographers working in all styles, in traditional or digital formats, are invited to enter up to two of their photographic images for the international juried photography exhibition Glimpses in Time. The top award recipient will receive a solo exhibition at the Joyce Gordon Gallery. Entry forms and submission guidelines can be found at: www.joycegordonphotographygallery.com. This year’s exhibit pays tribute to the life and art of James Van Der Zee, an American-born photographer who produced the most comprehensive documentation of the Harlem Renaissance. His experimentation with double exposures and retouching negatives allowed him to articulate the persona of a period that influenced generations of artists around the globe.

Elizabeth and Mallory Factor Prize for Southern Art. Given to a living artist who is either working in the South or has contributed to the development of art of the South, the annual Prize will be accompanied by a $10,000 cash award. This Prize has been established by a generous gift from Elizabeth and Mallory Factor in honor of the Gibbes’ century long dedication to supporting living Southern artists.
The inaugural prize will be awarded in May 2008. The selection process will begin in January with the shortlist announced in late February. A panel of experts will choose the shortlist and the museum will make the selection of the recipient from the shortlist.
Artists can either self nominate through the Web site (www.factorprize.org), or gallerists, curators, directors and interested laypeople can nominate their favorites through the Web site. Nominations can begin December 15.
