TALLAHASSEE, FL – Secretary of State Glenda E. Hood announces an exhibition of paintings and mixed-media works entitled, Equinox by Hialeah artist Christian Duran. The exhibition will be on display from October 6 through January 3, 2004 in the Cabinet Meeting Room of the Florida State Capitol Building.

“The Department of State is pleased to provide Florida artists with the opportunity to exhibit their works at the Capitol Complex,” said Secretary Hood. “As a result, Florida’s citizens, visitors, and political leaders are exposed to a dynamic range of artworks from around the state, from traditional landscape paintings to more abstract works like those of Christian Duran.”

For this exhibition, Christian Duran has created a series of works based on celestial themes. Utilizing the circle as a symbol for complete- ness, unity and beauty, these pieces explore the phenomenon of the Yin and Yang. He states, “In all things tangible and intangible exist a balance between chaos and order, and through these, all is made complete, perfect, and beautiful.” In pursuing universal truths through his work, the artist hopes to uncover a reflection, or a glimpse, of his own nature.

Christian Duran studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute, Miami-Dade Community College, and the New World School of the Arts. His works have been featured in numerous group exhibitions in Florida, Missouri, and Kansas. In 2001, he participated in the Fundacion Valparaiso Artist Residency in Almeria, Spain.

This exhibition is part of the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs’ Capitol Complex Exhibition Program. The Cabinet Meeting Room is located on the Lower Level of the Capitol. Hours are Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a tour guide only. Call in advance for available tour times at 850/488-6167.
