Mission Statement

Enzian exists to entertain, inspire, educate, and connect the community through film.

Proposal Description

Instructions to the Applicant

Describe the proposal for which you are requesting funding. Include goals, fully measurable objectives, activities, and a timeline. If you are an LAA or SSO, please include a statement that describes the services provided to your audience (including membership) and how those services are provided.

For 26 years, Enzian has championed the belief that "Film Is Art” and committed itself to bringing that art to Central Florida audiences. More than just a place to watch movies, Enzian is a gathering place for a wide variety of audiences in our community, including many underserved groups such as ethnic communities, children and families, students, independent filmmakers, and more. Enzian opens worlds to our audiences through its film programming and encourages community discussion before and after the movies.

GOAL: CONNECT THE COMMUNITY THROUGH FILM
OBJECTIVE: Expand Enzian’s reach into new and underserved local communities via film programming and special events targeted to specific communities such as the Asian, Jewish, Hispanic and other underserved populations.

THE ENZIAN MOVIE CLUB was developed as a way to further engage members of the community with limited access to educational opportunities in discussions about film. The Movie Club is free and open to the public and functions much like a book club, wherein a topic based on Enzian’s regular or special event programming is chosen and promoted in advance. The group then meets each month to discuss the topic with local experts and guest speakers. One of the most successful Movie Club events hosted a panel of guest speakers and was moderated by President Henry Maldonado to discuss the screening of the Academy Award®-nominated film, OUTRAGE. The esteemed panel of experts included Orlando City Commissioner, Patty Sheehan; Orlando Sentinel’s, Scott Maxwell; Log Cabin Republican member, Patrick Howell; and local filmmaker and college professor, Eric Breitenbach.

Four annual cultural film festivals are produced in addition to the internationally acclaimed Florida Film Festival, including SOUTH ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL, BROUHAHA FILM & VIDEO SHOWCASE (Florida student filmmakers) KIDFEST (a family friendly festival) and the CENTRAL FLORIDA JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL.

Enzian hosts exciting MEET THE FILMMAKER events that have featured some of the finest filmmakers working today. Meet the Filmmaker events are scheduled periodically at Enzian and sometimes in partnership with other organizations. This event deepens the audience members’ connection to a film by hosting intimate conversations between a filmmaker or topical expert and the movie-going audience.

GOAL: EDUCATE
OBJECTIVE: Provide opportunities for independent filmmakers and students.

Florida filmmakers are in great need of exhibition opportunities to screen their new work. In particular the exhibition of important and challenging work often goes unsupported.

ANNUAL BROUHAHA FILM & VIDEO SHOWCASE serves as the premier outlet for Florida produced short films and videos, representing the entire spectrum of the state's immense talent pool. A fun-filled gathering for lovers of independent film, the Best of Brouhaha, as selected by local industry professionals, finds its way into the acclaimed Florida Film Festival.

FILMSLAM SHOWCASE: On the second Sunday of every month Enzian produces the Film Slam Showcase. Independent filmmakers in Florida submit their new and independent films and each month Enzian selects 6-8 short films for screening at the facility as part of the monthly Showcase. Two local film professionals serve as volunteers to screen the submissions and prepare the screening schedule. Winners of the monthly Film Slam are invited to screen their films at the Annual Brouhaha Film & Video Showcase, and winners there are invited to participate in the prestigious Florida Film Festival.

Each semester Enzian brings on 1-2 INTERNS to give them real-life experience in marketing and development. The programming department adds 2 interns from Sept. -April specifically for the FFF, allowing them an insider's glance on how to program a first class film festival. This year Enzian plans to offer additional internships for students interested in learning the technical aspects of showing films and putting on a festival.

THE YOUNG FILMMAKERS CAMP is designed to teach students about the history of film and its importance as a form of art. Children get hands-on filmmaking experience, create their own work of art, and present their finished work projected on the big screen, ensuring that Central Florida youth achieve greater fluency in film and video, arguably the most powerful language of the 21st Century.

GOAL: ENTERTAIN
OBJECTIVE: Increase audience attendance and community participation in Enzian programming by 3%.

REGULAR PROGRAMMING is comprised of daily screenings of 30 to 40 regional premieres of internationally recognized American independent and foreign films each year. Feature presentations showcase the most critically acclaimed independent and international films. Many of these films are not screened anywhere else in the community and would never be seen by local audiences if it were not for Enzian’s programming.

Enzian offers special programming in the form of seminars, guest artist showcases, educational programs, and film festivals for minority and underserved audiences in the diverse Central Florida community. Enzian is a cabaret-style cinema theater with a seating capacity of 215. The facility is capable of professionally presenting virtually all video and computer sources and anything from 16mm to Scope 35mm works.

Enzian’s largest and most successful annual event is the highly regarded FLORIDA FILM FESTIVAL (FFF) that just celebrated its 20th Anniversary.
The regional festival, which attracted just under 10,000 movie enthusiasts in its inaugural year, has grown in size and stature, with attendance of 21,000 in 2011.

Culture Builds Florida's Future

Instructions to the Applicant

Using the response areas below, describe the relationship between the proposal and the Division's strategic plan, Culture Builds Florida' Future. Applicants must complete at least one of the next four response areas.

  1. Strengthening the Economy

According to United Arts of Central Florida “for every dollar spent on the arts, approximately $10 in revenue is generated in related revenue to restaurants, hotels, retail sales, transportation, space rental and parking fees.”

Enzian’s largest project each year is the Florida Film Festival with attendance of more than 20,000 for this 10 day event and generates significant tourist attendance. Enzian also hosts hundreds of local, national and international filmmakers every year. These activities result in impressive economic impact in Central Florida by increasing the number of out-of-town guests and attendees resulting in increased room nights and car rentals plus additional expenditure on activities such as attractions and restaurants.

According to New York Correspondent, Claus Mueller, in his article Film Festival Tourism, “A relatively recent phenomenon is film festival tourism. Public and private agencies are embracing film festival tourism as facilitating new sources of income both for local business and taxation.”

Of the 165 films screened at the 2011 FFF, over 16% (27 films) were shot in Florida or produced by Florida filmmakers. 54% (89 films) were US productions by out-of-state filmmakers. 29% of the 165 films were foreign films.

The 165 films came from 25 countries, including unusual sources such as Cambodia, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Colombia, Argentina, and Luxembourg.

The following results of surveying by the Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureau of 2010 FFF are an indication of Enzian's ability to deliver economic impact.

    • The 2010 FFF supported 47 FTE jobs, which generated $1,147,000 of resident household income of which $398,000 was locally generated household income.
    • Total spending at the 2010 FFF, including spending by local and out-of-town attendees, was estimated to be $1,918,543.
    • Out-of-town visitors spent an estimated $1,252,350.
    • Average per person expenditure at the 2010 FFF was $195.28 and 99% reported staying in a hotel/motel while in the area.

  2. Learning and Wellness

Enzian is careful to select the best new American independent and
international films available, thereby supplying a broad perspective of topics and expressions and providing lifelong learning opportunities for the entire community. Enzian offers panel discussions, workshops and minority focused film festivals to reach underserved populations and diversify its offerings. Moreover, filmmakers are often on hand, providing the community with insights and interpreting their creative work. The following programs offer learning opportunities for a wide range of ages including young people, college students, amateur and professional film artists as well as film enthusiasts.

Enzian has been expanding and refining its KIDFEST SUMMER MOVIE SERIES AND YOUNG FILMMAKERS CAMP every year since its inception in 2005. The Young Filmmakers Camp allows 32 children entering grades 5-8 to experience the art of filmmaking as they study cinematic techniques and dive into the production of an independent film. After wrapping the shoot, the students get the thrill of seeing their films projected on the big screen at Enzian with fellow filmmakers, family, and friends at a special Red Carpet screening. This project was recently honored with a DISNEY HELPING KIDS SHINE grant award.

MEET THE FILMMAKERS events are scheduled periodically at Enzian and sometimes in partnership with other organizations.

THE ENZIAN MOVIE CLUB was developed as a way to engage members of the community with limited access to educational opportunities in discussions about film.

INTERNS (1 or 2 each semester) from area colleges and universities are employed at Enzian to give them the real-life experience in the marketing world. The programming department adds 2 interns specifically for the FFF, allowing them an insider's view on how to program a film festival.

  3. Building Leadership

Matthew Curtis, Enzian’s Programming Director, won the 2010 Florida Film Critics Circle (FFCC) Golden Orange Award for significant contributions to film and filmmaking in Florida.

Enzian joined the Eatonville-Maitland Cultural Alliance in 2002. Six cultural institutions joined together to work on projects and cross promotion of members' programming and organizations. These institutions are the Association to Preserve Eatonville Community, the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey, Enzian Theater/Florida Film Festival, Holocaust Memorial Resource & Education Center, and the Maitland Historical Society and Museums. Annual information brochures are produced and distributed at all member organizations and events, and discount exchanges are developed between member organizations.

Through the partnership with Red Chair Project, the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Central Florida works with Enzian to promote and enhance the group sales and hotel and restaurant packaging as part FFF. The Red Chair Project assists the Festival in packaging and selling tickets to large and small groups outside the Orlando metro area. FFF 2010’s collaboration with the Orlando Convention & Visitors Bureau "Orlando Makes Me Smile" contest was recently featured in the Travel section of ABCnews.com. Why does Orlando make you smile? Young people between the ages of 13 and 18 and showed the answer on film, by taking part in a competition sponsored by the Orlando CVB, the FFF and KIDS FIRST!. The contest theme played off the destination's marketing slogan, "Orlando Makes Me Smile."

The City of Winter Park & the City of Maitland will work with Enzian to promote the FFF to local merchants and assist in efforts to engage the local merchants in promotion of the FFF. The Mayor of Maitland proclaimed February 15, 2010 Enzian Day in celebration of the 25th anniversary.

  4. Design and Development

Surrounded by weeping oaks and other tropical foliage, with a fountain-lined
courtyard, Enzian is a great one-stop shop for dinner and a movie, and the gorgeous outdoor setting of the new Eden Bar serves as a place to gather before, during and after films and has enhanced Enzian’s unique character. The rich landscape of green surrounding the outside patio bar (made of Brazilian walnut), along with the fun and colorful mural of a Floridian garden of Eden created by Enzian National Board Member and Oscar nominated animator Bill Plympton, makes this one of the most unique and charming cultural gathering places in Central Florida.

Proposal Impact

Instructions to the Applicant

Describe the economic impact of your organization as a whole and the proposal in particular on your local community. Include a description of your proposal's education and outreach activities.

Former Governor Charlie Crist wrote of the Florida Film Festival, "Florida takes great pride in its filmmaking industry, which employs over 34,000 Floridians. Not only will this film festival allow us to continue to enrich the lives of those who visit and live in our state, it also plays an important role in showcasing Florida as a leader in all aspects of the film industry."

Americans for the Arts in partnership with myregion.org, United Arts of Central Florida and the seven-county Central Florida arts councils: Brevard Cultural Alliance, Lake County Tourism and Business Relations, Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs, Osceola Center for the Arts, Polk Arts Alliance, Seminole Cultural Arts Council and Volusia County Leisure Services collaborated to produce a comprehensive study of the economic impact of nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in the Central Florida region.

Enzian special programming expands our loyal audience base by presenting a wide variety of events attractive to a diverse community like the metro Orlando area. These programs include the annual Cultural Film Circuit which features Beyond Bollywood: South Asian Film Festival and the Central Florida Jewish Film Festival in addition to Enzian’s largest special project the internationally acclaimed Florida Film Festival as well as the Brouhaha Film & Video Showcase (a showcase for Florida independent and student filmmakers), and KidFest: Young Filmmakers Camp and Film Series.

Enzian also produces a monthly FilmSlam showcase for local student and independent filmmakers to screen films for the public. Enzian presents the Cult and Family Classics Series (twice -monthly screenings of cult classic films) and free screenings of Popcorn Flicks in the Park monthly (outdoors offsite - presenting a classic film with an introduction by a local film educator or authority). Weekly, in an effort to provide free programming for those who cannot afford the regular ticket price, Enzian screens a classic film for free on the lawn outside the theatre.

THE ENZIAN MOVIE CLUB was developed as a way to engage members of the community with limited access to educational opportunities in discussions about film. The Movie Club is free and open to the public and functions much like a book club, wherein a topic based on Enzian’s regular or special event programming is chosen and promoted in advance. The group then meets each month to discuss the topic with local experts and guest speakers.

The surrounding community has embraced Enzian as a venue where ideas and thoughtful dialogue can be exchanged between its visitors by way of viewing great cinema. One of Enzian’s most successful and enriching programs has been its Meet the Filmmaker Showcase. This event deepens the audience members’ connection to a film by hosting intimate conversations between a filmmaker or topical expert and the movie-going audience. For example in partnership with the University of Central Florida Film Department, director, Tanya Hamilton, recently provided an intimate Q&A session after the screening of her film NIGHT CATCHES US. In collaboration with the ZORA! Festival, writer, Kristy Andersen appeared with her documentary, ZORA NEALE HURSTON: JUMP AT THE SUN.

Enzian also participates annually in the Manhattan Short Film Festival, and the UCF Latin American Cultural Festival of Orlando. Enzian Theater Youth Education Films offer curriculum specific films for K-12 students from area school systems.

In the “great recession”, Enzian has throttled administrative costs, while increasing programmatic and production expenses to ensure the highest quality experience for the audience. This has resulted in increased earned revenues while corporate, donative, and government support has diminished. Enzian has plans to increase philanthropic giving through a much needed building replacement fund capital campaign. In the meantime, our service to the community has been streamlined and continues to grow. All profits and/or proceeds are being reinvested into programming and the building replacement fund capital campaign.

Describe the fiscal condition of the organization as it relates to the successful completion of the proposal. Also describe plans to sustain the proposal activities after the grant period.

Enzian is the largest grossing single screen facility in Florida. It regularly exceeds national per screen averages according to industry publications Variety and IndieWire. 98% of the time Enzian exceeds the nationally published weekly average.

Enzian continues to face cuts in state and local funding for the FFF and all of its programming (because of the current economic climate and state budget short falls). To address this economic downturn Enzian is focused on generating new corporate donations and national foundation support. These are not just random increases but the result of a strategic approach to generating sustainable support for the Enzian and the Florida Film Festival.

Enzian has instituted a series of fund raisers celebrating major holidays with classical films that have become very popular and successful. Our end-of-year and annual campaigns continue to meet our goals. Enzian has not reduced programming and attendance is solid.

Enzian has transitioned successfully to a new ticketing system that allows our patrons to donate easily and on-line when purchasing tickets, a “tip jar” function. This new system has already generated more than $1,700 in donations.

Enzian has added lunch service at its Eden Bar on the weekends. This is a long term effort, and while we are having lunch crowds that are larger than they were last year, we expect them to keep growing as more and more people learn that we are open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for lunch.

Evaluation Plan

Instructions to the Applicant

Briefly describe your methods and processes for gathering, analyzing, and reporting data to evaluate your programming with the purpose of improving, deciding to continue, or stopping.

At Enzian the local and regional impact of our programming is evaluated weekly on a variety of important criteria, including event attendance and audience development, artistic excellence, direct feedback from our patrons, community use of our information outlets (e.g., website, newsletter, etc.), industry participation in and support of our events, and local/national/global media coverage of events.

Enzian maintains a customer Comment Card online at its website Enzian.org designed to generate direct customer evaluation and comments. Sometimes specific surveys are developed and posted online during the year to solicit special information about a particular program.

Paper Surveys for Film Festivals and Special programming (especially education programming), are also distributed to attendees and/or participants at those events. Student participants in KidFest: Young Filmmakers Camp are evaluated with pre and post written evaluations. The Annual Florida Film Festival (Enzian’s largest project each year) is surveyed and evaluated in an extensive process. For the past eight years, Florida Film Festival has collaborated with the research department of the Orlando Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureau to create and analyze a survey measuring the profile and satisfaction levels of festival attendees. Attendance records, media coverage, and fund raising results are also evaluated annually.

Enzian is a four-time winner of awards for Artistic Excellence in Media Arts from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and was awarded one of only two NEA media Arts awards in Florida in 2010. Also in 2010 Enzian received the Outstanding Community Service Award of the William MacArthur International Affairs Program.

In 2010 the FLORIDA FILM FESTIVAL was named one of the “leading 50 film festivals in the world” by IndieWire.com. The FFF is recognized as a qualifying festival in the categories of Live Action Short Films and Animated Short Films by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
