Division News

Fellowship Program Update 
The Individual Artist Fellowship Panel meetings will conclude on October 25, 2004.  The panels' recommendations will then be sent to the Florida Arts Council at their meeting in Orlando on November 9-11.  Once the Arts Council approves the awards, the recommendations are then sent to the Secretary of State for final approval.  All fellowship applicants will receive official written notification of the results in December.  The All applicants will also receive copies of the panelists' evaluation/score sheets with written comments. 

The next deadline for the Individual Artist Fellowship program is June 1, 2005 for Visual Arts and Media Arts applicants ONLY.  The guidelines will be posted on the Division's website next year.


Artist Enhancement Grants Program Update 
Nearly 200 applications were received for the August 30th deadline.  The South Florida Cultural Consortium is now in the process of processing applications and conducting a panel meeting. It is anticipated that artists will be notified of panel recommendations by the end of November.  The next deadline to apply is February 28, 2005


New Exhibits at the Capitol

“A Time to Grow,” an exhibition of mixed-media works by Tallahassee artist Kenneth Reshard, will be on display from October 4, 2004 through January 6, 2005 in the Old Capitol Gallery. A reception will take place on Friday, November 5, 2004 at 6:30 p.m. Working in a variety of artistic media from ceramics, painting, and drawing, to printmaking, graphics, and collage, Reshard often combines multi-media techniques in a single piece. The Capitol Complex Exhibition Program provides Florida artists with the opportunity to exhibit their work at Florida's State Capitol, a highly-visible, year-round tourist attraction. The program offers four galleries for exhibitions: the Capitol Gallery on the 22nd Floor, the Old Capitol Gallery in the historic capitol building, the Cabinet Meeting Room, and the Governor's Office Gallery. Exhibitions are normally booked several years in advance. The Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) is a national nonprofit that helps strengthen and sustain the careers of professional craft artists. CERF is responding to artists who have been hit hard by the recent hurricanes Ivan, Frances and Charley. CERF has a Disaster Relief Fund that provides quick grants of up to $1,000, and offers no-interest loans of up to $8,000 to qualified applicants who have been affected by disasters. The Martin County Public Art Advisory Board is seeking to commission a public art to be located in Indian Riverside Park in Jensen Beach, Florida. Indian Riverside Park is a 54-acre regional park along the western shore of the Indian river. The proposed site of the art is to be located in and/or around a lake to the left of the entrance to the park. The board is looking for an impact piece that will complement and enhance the features of the park. The piece should be one which is illuminated during the evening hours. The budget is $75,000. Kalliope announces the Sue Saniel Elkind Poetry Contest. $1,000.00 First Place Award for the Best Poem by a Woman Poetry may be in any style and on any subject. Maximum poem length is 50 lines. Entry fee is $4.00 per poem or 3 poems for $10.00. Payment must accompany submissions. Any number of poems may be submitted. Poems that have been previously published, have received monetary awards, or are under consideration elsewhere are not eligible. Manuscripts must be typed. Submit 2 copies of each poem, one copy with the author's name, address and phone number TYPED on the upper right corner. The author's name, address and phone number or identification must NOT appear on the other copy which will be used in the judging. (Strict adherence to guidelines is required. The Tampa Public Art Program is seeking to commission an artist/photographer to explore and photograph life and the crucial issues and events within the City of Tampa for one year. The project is open to art photographers, photojournalists and documentary photographers. This year, the program is particularly interested in works that deal with the concept of light. Women In Photography International (WIPI) announces an international call for entries for "Decisive Moments: A Tribute to Henri Cartier-Bresson," an international juried online photographic exhibition of works by female photographers. Greater Miami Youth Symphony announces the 2005 Robert Strassburg Piano Concerto Competition for young pianists. REQUIRED COMPETITION MUSIC: Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin. COMPETITION INFORMATION: Date: The competition will be held Saturday, January 22, 2005. Participants will be notified of their audition time in advance. Participant must be in elementary, middle or high school, and may not be older than 18 years old. Music must be memorized for competition. Alice James Books, a nonprofit cooperative poetry press, will be accepting submissions of poetry manuscripts for the Beatrice Hawley Award postmarked through December 1st, 2004. The Miami Performing Art Center is seeking a temporary Programming Coordinator to cover the Programming Manager while on leave. The duration of this position is approximately 10 weeks, commencing November 1, 2004 through mid-January 2005. Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Director of Programming in developing and implementing a comprehensive education and community programming strategy for the Performing Arts Center. This may include live and recorded performance art in a variety of art forms, on-site and off-site activities, the creative use of electronic media and other emerging technologies and ongoing liaison with key educational and community stakeholders to ensure that its programs and facilities are meeting expressed needs. Government and community relations are also part of the scope of the coordinator’s role particularly at a regional and local level. It also includes working with the Center’s Resident Companies and other client organizations to ensure that, as far as possible, a consistent set of cultural values are applied to all programs which take place in the Center. The coordinator would also be involved in ensuring that the educational and outreach services of the Center are equally available to the diverse communities of Miami-Dade County. Florida Grand Opera has openings for two experienced, top-notch development professionals: Director of Individual Giving who will be responsible for the annual giving program. Specific responsibilities include overseeing the annual fund campaign as well as prospecting, soliciting and closing new and increased individual gifts. The Director will also oversee the stewardship of major donors. The Director will also be expected to deal with both major gifts and planned gifts as necessary and to participate in the current capital campaign. The company budget is $10 million, with about half from contributed income. The annual giving program accounts for just over $2 million. The Director’s primary office will be in Miami and he or she will provide day to day supervision to the development staff in that office. The Director reports to the Managing Director of Development. The Museum of Discovery and Science in Ft. Lauderdale seeks Communications and Promotions Coordinator. QUALIFICATIONS: Must have good written and verbal communication skills and ability to cultivate and maintain media relations related to the generation of publicity.
