UrbanArts, endorsing sponsor of the WINDScape ideas competition, invites artists/designers/teams to participate in the WINDScape ideas competition. Cape Wind Associates has proposed America's first offshore wind farm - 130 wind turbines in Nantucket Sound to supply 70% of Cape Cod and the Islands with clean and renewable power. This project presents the unique opportunity to connect the community to its energy source and to make renewable energy visible and meaningful to its users. The Boston Society of Architects, along with public- and private- sector sponsors, invites designers to participate in an ideas competition. This design competition challenges entrants to envision a Cape Wind Park that is more than just a utility to generate electricity, but a place to educate the public about the impacts of renewable wind energy on the environment. The City of Rockville, in partnership with RD Rockville, LLC and Federal Realty Investment Trust, is pleased to announce Call for Entries for nine public art projects in support of a $500,000 commitment to integrate publicly accessible art into a vibrant Rockville Town Square where “progress lies, not in enhancing what is – but advancing toward, what will be” a completely new redeveloped area within the active core of Rockville Town Center.

These site-specific public art projects are seen as opportunities to honor and embrace Rockville’s long history and rich cultural diversity. The presence of public art throughout the area is viewed as a means to engage and involve those who visit for the first time as well as those who experience Rockville Town Square daily. These public art projects will become part of the identity of Rockville. All finalists must identify how their proposed project is significant to Rockville in content. How does the art relate to Rockville’s “past, present and/or future?” How does the art embody the “who, what, when or where” of Rockville?.

Rockville Town Square is a 15-acre project that will create an active destination featuring a mixed-use environment with: street level retail, restaurants and shops, more than 600 residential units built in the four stories above the retail, a new cultural arts building for the visual arts; a public plaza designed to host concerts and other special events, a new Rockville Regional Library (the largest in the Montgomery County system) and three parking garages. Rockville Town Square is one block from the Rockville Metro station serving the Washington-Metropolitan region and Rockville Pike/Route 355, a main artery of the City of Rockville and surrounding Montgomery County. The area is also within a short walking distance of many Rockville neighborhoods.

On June 15, 2004, the ground breaking for Rockville Town Square was held. The targeted grand opening is planned for late 2006. For more information about the sites open for proposals, and more details about submission requirements, visit: http://www.rockvillemd.gov/arts/call-entries.htm.

The City of Glendale announces a public art opportunity for an artist to design, fabricate and install a public artwork for a new recreation and aquatics center. All professional artists living in the United States are eligible to apply. The City of Glendale is embarking upon the process of constructing a new recreation and aquatics center. The multi-generational center will link with the existing Foothills Regional Park to create a unified campus-like environment. Foothills Regional Park currently includes children's playgrounds, shaded picnic areas, trails along Skunk Creek Linear Park, a lighted ball field complex for softball, youth baseball, soccer and flag football, and a skate court for in-line skating and skateboarding. Outdoor volleyball and basketball courts will be added in 2005. The site is highly visible from the intersection of Union Hills Road and 57th Avenue in the North West Valley. The character of the project will be in concert with the overall architectural design of the new Recreation and Aquatic Center building.

Original and one-of-a-kind artist-designed bollards and other art features for the building's exterior will be the primary area of emphasis for the Center's public art project. The art features are to represent the various activities that will occur at the Center, such as swimming and diving, kayaking, tubing, basketball, volleyball, weight-lifting, running, racquetball, culinary classes, dance, painting and other art-making classes, as well as other activities in the Foothills Regional Park, such as the picnicking, bicycling, baseball, soccer, in-line skating and
skateboarding. Please visit http://www.glendaleaz.com/PublicArt/ for further information.
