“Old Roads, New Turns” is a a musical journey led by Lee Hunter and Arvid Smith, a duo of classically trained musical alchemists. In concert, they present their unique interpretations of traditional Appalachian and European folk songs, as well as their own compositions inspired by these styles, all seasoned with background, folklore, and humor. With their finely crafted songs and inspired arrangements of traditional tunes from both sides of the Atlantic, their music is a joyous collision of down-home, back-porch, “Oh Brother” simplicity and world beat vibes. Theirs is a forward looking vision, soulful and heartfelt, with complete reverence for the tradition. In addition to the “Old Roads, New Turns” concert, Lee and Arvid offer a holiday program entitled “Wintersong” that features medieval to modern carols, readings, and songs of the winter season. Residency programs offered are as follows: Story Telling Through Song-the folklore of Celtic and Appalachian songs; Finding Your Own Music - a creativity workshop; Incorporating Music into Academics - an arts infusion workshop for teachers; Instrumental Color - music as sound; Slide Guitar - you don’t have to fret; and The World is a Drum - a percussion workshop.
