Artwork by TALLAHASSEE, FL -- In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), Secretary of State Sue M. Cobb announces an exhibition of paintings in the Governor’s Gallery by Miami Beach artist Romero Britto. Organized by the Division of Cultural Affairs, this exhibition is part of a statewide celebration initiated by Governor Jeb Bush to commemorate five centuries of Hispanic history, culture, and prosperity in Florida. "The Department of State is delighted to partner with the Governor’s office to promote the special celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month," said Secretary of State Sue Cobb. "Romero Britto is a wonderfully talented artist and a state treasure. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to exhibit his work in our Capitol." An accomplished portrait artist, Britto recently honored the founder of Art Basel, Ernst Beyeler with a portrait series to raise funds for Fondation Beyeler, Mr. Beyeler’s private museum in Riehen, Switzerland. Britto’s regard for the arts, as well as his recognition by the global arts community was emphasized when he was chosen to speak at the 2006 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Britto has appeared on NBC’s hit show "The Apprentice" and ABC’s "Extreme Makeover-Home Edition." In spite of his time consuming and demanding schedule, and well-publicized events and activities, Britto makes it a priority to visit with, and encourage students at Yale University and the University of Miami as well as elementary and secondary schools around the country. His generosity is also well known. He donates his time, art and money to over 200 charitable organizations each year. The recipient of the Florida Arts Recognition Award in 2004 and declared a Florida Ambassador of the Arts in 2005, Britto is an advocate for charitable organizations and art education worldwide and most of all, an artist who believes "art is too important not to share". Britto’s work includes acrylic on canvas paintings as well as monumental aluminum sculpture. Romero Britto’s prolific body of work can be seen in galleries and museums on five continents.
