John Bailly, "Petit Larousse," 2003,
mixed media on paper, 29" x 42," collection of Marc Cabrera
TALLAHASSEE, FL – Secretary of State Glenda E. Hood announced
today an exhibition of mixed media works by Miami artist John Bailly.
The exhibition entitled “Atlas and Index” will be on display
from January 7, 2005 through April 7, 2005 in the Old Capitol Gallery.
Bailly’s collection includes paintings and mixed media works from
the past three years which attempt to illustrate the mass of information
generally processed by individuals and the methods in which they receive
it. The subject matter is largely random, and the images result from
juxtapositions of the many different ideas conceived by the artist.
Much of the exhibit was previously displayed under the title of “Encyclopedia,”
and it continues to deal with the concept of challenging an objective
reality.
John Bailly attended the Miami-Dade Community College and Florida International
University, where he received a B.F.A. in painting. He later received
a M.F.A. in painting and printmaking from Yale University, and is currently
a Fellow in the Honors College of Florida International University.
Bailly has been honored as a visiting artist at Edinboro University,
the University of South Florida, and as a visiting critic at Boston
University. He lives in Miami, Florida.
This exhibition is part of the Florida Department of State, Division
of Cultural Affairs’ Capitol Complex Exhibition Program. The Old
Capitol Gallery is located in the Lower Level Rotunda of the Old Capitol.
Hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Saturday, 11:00
