TALLAHASSEE, FL – Secretary of State Glenda E. Hood announces an exhibition of abstract paintings by Miami artist Lia Galletti, from March 31 through June 20, 2003, in the Old Capitol Gallery. The exhibition is part of the Florida Department of State's Capitol Complex Exhibition Program.

Self-taught artist Lia Galletti left her native Cuba in 1960 and settled in New York prior to moving to Miami in 1970. In New York, she was exposed to abstract painting, and it soon became her visual language. Her style has since evolved to a more minimalist expression. “Today, I reflect more often, thinking about time, and have gone beyond techniques and mediums, finding ways to communicate my thoughts, as a dialogue between nothing and man,” states Galletti. “In a time of so much peripheral information brought about by technology, my work explores the primal and simple language of the soul through abstract forms, their only representational role being to bring forth the true colors of our feelings and emotions in their purest strength.”

Galletti’s work has been exhibited in Miami, Washington D.C. and Boston and internationally in San Juan, Canada, Spain and Israel. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and has received several awards, including an Honorable Mention from the Florida Individual Artist Fellowship Program. Her work is included in private and public collections including the Boston Print Makers at the Brockton Art Museum, Boston, MA; Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, San Juan, PR; and the Art Museum of the Americas at the Organization of American States, Washington, DC.

The Old Capitol Gallery is located in the Capitol Complex in the Lower Level Rotunda of the Old Capitol. Hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4:30 p.m. For further information, contact Sandy Shaughnessy at the Division of Cultural Affairs at (850) 245-6480 or visit: www.florida-arts.org
