TALLAHASSEE, FL – Secretary of State Glenda E. Hood announces an exhibition of mixed-media works entitled Abstract Cartography by North Miami artist Morgan Lorenzo. The exhibition will be on display from April 14 through July 6, 2003 in the Cabinet Meeting Room of the Florida State Capitol Building.

The abstract works of Morgan Lorenzo explore the abstraction of maps, bringing attention to the vast resource of land found in Florida. “Maps have always had a mesmerizing effect on me,” says Lorenzo. “I spend entire afternoons getting lost in their detail. The names of the paintings are taken from the places that have served as inspiration for the initial image. I believe the exotic locales stimulate my imagination to conjure up a substitute image of the physical place.”

Morgan Lorenzo served as an artist-in-residence for North Dade Middle School and was a visiting artist at South Florida Inner City Games in Miami. Her work has been exhibited throughout the state and is included in several private collections. She holds a degree from Darton College in Albany, Georgia.

This exhibition is part of the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs’ Capitol Complex Exhibition Program. The Cabinet Meeting Room is located on the Lower Level of the Capitol. Hours are Monday - Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a tour guide only. Call in advance for available tour times at 850/488-6167.
