TALLAHASSEE, FL – Secretary of State Glenda E. Hood announces an exhibition of mixed-media paintings entitled “Living with Intention” by Mount Dora artist Christine Peloquin. The exhibition will be on display from November 15, 2003 through February 13, 2004 in the Capitol Gallery, located on the 22nd floor of the State Capitol Building.

“Visitors to the Capitol Gallery will enjoy the intriguing paintings of Christine Peloquin,” said Secretary Hood. “She is a prolific artist whose work has been widely exhibited throughout Florida, and the Department of State welcomes the opportunity to display her works at the Capitol.”

Painting by Christine Peloquin

Drawing inspiration from her French Canadian ancestors who migrated to work in the textile mills of Rhode Island, Christine Peloquin has created a series of mixed-media collages made of fabric, paint and charcoal. Her works depict human faces and figures, as well as abstract designs, and her process involves many layers of texture, paint and imagery. She first combines fabrics from antique cloths, such as burlap, cotton bags, linen towels and tablecloths with contemporary fabrics like velvet and polyester as well as a variety of papers and 2-dimensional found objects, and applies them to wood panels. She then paints on top of the fabrics with acrylics and charcoals to express an emotion, a mood, or idea. The result is an amazing visual play. “My intention is to create a visual record of personal experiences,” says Peloquin, “yet the image always seems to take on a life of it’s own.”

Peloquin received a Bachelor’s degree from Rollins College in Winter Park. Her work has hung in galleries from West Palm Beach to Pensacola and has been included in several publications, such as the St. Petersburg Times, the Orlando Sentinel and New American Paintings. She has received awards at the Street Painting Festival in Orlando, The Vail Arts Festival in Colorado, and the Soho Gallery in Pensacola.
