TALLAHASSEE, FL – Secretary of State Glenda E. Hood announces an exhibition of sculptures entitled Art Out of its Frame by artist Volf Roitman. The exhibition will be on display from May 16 through August 29, 2003 in the Capitol Gallery, located on the 22nd floor of the State Capitol Building.

This exhibition showcases an impressive selection of non-figurative, freeform sculptures by artist Volf Roitman. Made of laser-cut metal and paper/cardboard, these playful, colorful sculptures are designed with intricately cut-out shapes that resemble Japanese Origami. Roitman’s works are part of the MADI art movement which originated in Latin America. Celebrating the splendors of geometry, MADI art is non-figurative and combines geometrical cut-outs or irregularly shaped forms with flat, sharply defined colors. MADI works are always playful and often feature moving parts.

Uruguayan-born artist, Volf Roitman was first introduced to the MADI movement in Paris in 1951. He was a founder of the MADI Research and Study Center in Paris and was active in restructuring the movement in France. Today, he is Head of Communications and Archivist for MADI foundations in France, Spain, Argentina, Hungary, and Ireland. Plans are currently underway to design and build a national MADI center in Texas.

This exhibition is part of the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs’ Capitol Complex Exhibition Program. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For general information about the Capitol Complex Exhibition program, please contact Sandy Shaughnessy at the Division of Cultural Affairs at 850/245-6480 or visit www.florida-arts.org.
