TALLHASSEE, FL - Secretary of State Ken Detzner announces an exhibition of paintings entitled “Absolutely Doing Nothing,” by Miami Beach artist Carolina Salazar. The exhibition will be on display from February 3 through March 28, 2003 in the Old Capitol Building.

From her own unique perspective, artist Carolina Salazar examines the art of doing nothing in this series of insightful portraits. “I came to realize that I enjoy observing people when they are not doing anything, just being,” says Salazar. “Our culture is preoccupied with activity – it seems to expect people to be busy at all times. Our contemporary art culture expects art itself to be busy as well, by carrying huge meanings or agendas. I wanted to make objects that were deliberately opposite in both respects.”

Born in Santa Fe de Bogotá, Columbia, artist Carolina Salazar received a BFA in painting at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Her work has been exhibited in numerous group shows throughout the state and in 2001, she was awarded a Florida Individual Artist Fellowship.

This exhibition is part of the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs’ Capitol Complex Exhibition Program. The Old Capitol Gallery is located in the Lower Level Rotunda of the Old Capitol.
