Artist's Biography

Reverend O. L. Samuels was born in Wilcox County, Georgia, in 1931. His first creations were the toys he made to play with when he was six years old. He left home at eight years old, and worked at numerous odd jobs, learning to work with wood through these early experiences. Rev. Samuels now resides in Tallahassee, where he works out of his home. He is a self-taught, visionary artist with no formal training. His life experiences and highly personal, internal vision of the world figure prominently in his works; these often depict fantastical and mythical creatures. He builds each of his works by hand from carved pieces of wood, metal, fabric, and found objects. Reverend O. L. Samuels is a renowned sculptor, whose works have been displayed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum and The White House, as well as other notable museums throughout the country and numerous private collections.
