Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890-1998) has been a nationally recognized writer of Florida stories since the early 1920's. A lifelong environmentalist and women’s rights activist, Mrs. Douglas's career began as an editorial writer for the Miami Herald. She later wrote fictional stories for magazines and published her best-known work, The Everglades: River of Grass, in 1947. The book established her as a champion of the Everglades, widely regarded at the time as a mere wasteland, and educated the public about the need to protect its unique and fragile ecosystem. Her picturesque prose reflects the wisdom and vision of a woman who has dedicated much of her long life to capturing Florida's beauty in words.
