The Art in State Buildings Program places strong and impressive artwork
by state, national and international artists in public spaces where
our citizens and visitors can enjoy and learn on a daily basis. Vibrant
and appropriate public artwork enhances our state’s built environment,
says that we care about our public spaces and is an important element
in spurring economic development and tourism.
Since the program's beginnings in 1979, over 1,000 works of art have
been purchased or commissioned and placed in our public spaces to become
part of our permanent collection of art. They can be found in almost
every county, in state office buildings, in Department of Transportation
complexes, in Department of Health facilities, in district courthouses,
in highway patrol stations and in Florida National Guard Readiness Centers,
as well as at our state universities and colleges. Although the program
is open to any qualified artist, more than 60% of the artworks are by
Florida artists.
