Project:
Brevard Childrens Medical Services
Budget: $21,675
Deadline: 5 pm, Friday, August 21, 2009
Just 35 miles east of Orlando, Brevard County prides itself as the home of Kennedy Space Center, the only facility in the world that launches the Space Shuttle; Port Canaveral, the second-busiest cruise port in the world; 72 miles of beautiful Atlantic Ocean beaches; and the largest collection of endangered wildlife and plants in the continental United States.
With its tropical weather, cultural activities, educational opportunities, active and passive recreation options, high-technology industries, and family-friendly atmosphere, the Space Coast offers an exceptional quality of life that residents and visitors enjoy year-round. More than 500,000 people call its 16 municipalities and unincorporated areas "home."

The relatively new, un-incorporated town of Viera is northwest of the City of Melbourne in Brevard County. The new 25,000 square foot, 2-story, State-owned Brevard CMS facility is located on a 10-acre “health care campus” in Viera. Three programs - Children’s Medical Services (CMS), CATCH of Brevard, Inc. and Space Coast Early Steps - have all moved into the state-of-the-art CMS facility. Also, Brevard County Health Department’s new facility was recently built nearby.
The Brevard CMS provides pediatric sub-specialty care to children with special health care needs; CATCH of Brevard provides for pediatric primary care, and Space Coast Early Steps provides services and therapies for children with developmental delay. For more information about CMS, visit their website: http://www.doh.state.fl.us/cms/index.html
Beside the covered, patient drop-off / main entrance, a low wall encloses a small play yard for children awaiting their doctor’s appointments. This curved, brick wall also provides visual interest to the front entry. The spacious 2-story patient lobby/waiting room features a front glass window wall and two end walls featuring brightly colored squares.
From the patient lobby, parents and children access the Enrollment and Clinic areas on the building’s first floor where children are registered to receive services and, subsequently, receive direct patient care in various pediatric sub-specialty care clinic rooms. The building’s second floor provides space for offices that house nursing care coordination, service coordination and administration of the three programs that occupy the building.
Sites for Artwork
The project's Art Selection Committee has identified five potential sites for artwork (presented below). They would like to see examples of existing artwork but are also open to commissioning work.
There is no sequence or preference order for the first four sites but it is likely that a large portion of the budget will go toward at least one of these sites (entrance/lobby area). Some of the budget may also be used for one or more of the walls described in Site 5.
Site 1: The low, curved, brick wall (3'4"h) beside the entrance that encloses a secure play area provides an opportunity for exterior art applied along its surface - mosaic mural, ceramic tile, metal bas-relief, etc.
Site 2: The 2-story lobby space provides an opportunity for suspended artwork. A variety of colorful, yet easy-maintenance materials would be appropriate.
Site 3: Colorful glass designs could be installed within the mullions of some of the windows in the front window wall.
Site 4: The high wall directly opposite the entry doors and/or the space over the left & right doorways would be appropriate for two-dimensional work or colorful bas-relief sculpture.
Site 5: The staggered walls at the back of the lobby as well as wall spaces in the two main hallways at each end of a cross corridor provide potential places for two-dimensional artwork.
