Established in 1979, Florida's Art in State Buildings Program acquires artwork for new public facilities built with state funds. It requires that up to .5% of the construction appropriation be set aside to acquire artwork for permanent display in the public areas in, on or around that facility. This includes construction at the state universities and colleges.

  • Calls to Artists are issued periodically with project descriptions and requirements.
  • Artists may enter multiple projects but, because each project has its own art selection committee, they must send a separate entry for each project.
  • Artists enter by sending the following items to each of the projects that interest them.
  • Entries must be received by 5 pm on the deadline date.

SUBMISSION ITEMS: To enter each project, send the following items to the address provided in the project description:

Statement

A brief Letter of Interest that explains why your artwork is perfect for this project and how your submitted slides address the project requirements. This should not yet be a site-specific proposal.

Resume

A current professional resume, emphasizing public art experience, public collections and public commissions.

Images - slides or digital

NOTE !!  Most projects now ONLY accept digital images on CD.  Please read each project description carefully to determine if you can still submit slides for that project.

A minimum of ten & maximum of twenty 35mm 2"x2" slides of completed artworks or projects in a 9" x 11" plastic slide sheet. Slides must be labeled with the slide number and artist's name & title of work and marked to indicate Top.

OR a minimum of 10 & maximum of 20 digital images on a disposable CD that is clearly labeled with artist's name & the project name. Images should be in .JPG format with a minimum resolution of approximately 800x600 pixels (higher resolutions like 1900x1500 pixels provide sharper projected images).

Each image file should be named with 1) the artist's last name, 2) the corresponding image number on the ID Sheet and 3) the artwork title (use representative words of a long title). If the image is a "detail," please indicate that as well.

CDs should be formatted for the MS Windows environment. Any masking/borders should be black, not white. Artwork with sound or motion may be submitted as short MP3s.

The first five artworks presented will receive initial review. Don't forget to provide the committee with details/close-ups of large or complex artworks.

ID Sheet

Image identification page(s) that provides, for each submitted image, 1) the image number, 2) a thumbnail image of the work if submitting digital images, 3) title of work, 4) medium, 5) dimensions, 6) date of work and 7) price of work or amount of commission.

The ID Sheet must be headed with the specific project number and name, and the artist's name, address, phone number and email address.

NOTE: Statement, resume & Image ID Sheet may be included (as Word documents) on a submitted CD but a hard copy of each of the three text items must also be provided.

SASE (for slides only)

A self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of slides. CDs will not be returned.

Submission Tips!

OASIS is our new mailing list!!  Set up your Individual Profile now to receive notice of new Calls to Artists. Be sure to check the ASB boxes!

Remember, because the selection of artwork by volunteer committees takes a great deal of time, slides may not be returned for several months.

Galleries and artist's representatives are encouraged to submit materials for their artists.

CRITERIA

Participating artists must have reached a certain level of expertise and recognition in their medium. Their resumes should illustrate that they have met two of the following criteria:

  1. the artist's works are included in private, public, corporate or museum collections;
  2. the artist has received awards, grants or fellowships;
  3. the artist has completed other public commissions on a similar scale;
  4. the artist has participated in exhibitions at major museums or galleries.

CALLTO ARTISTS

NEW ! !

As of January 2008, ASB Call to Artists project descriptions will be issued individually by those state agencies and universities that have building projects rather than posted collectively here at the Division of Cultural Affairs web site.

Artists on the Division's OASIS mailing list will be notified of those Calls via email.

Artists may add themselves to the mailing list by setting up an Individual Profile in OASIS (click on the OASIS symbol on the Division's home page).

It will be the artist's responsibility to maintain the correct email address in their OASIS Profile.

Items that must be included in all of your entroes are described at left.

Please do not hesitate to contact Lee Modica, if you have questions concerning this program.
